A three day expert consultative forum was hosted in Abuja from the 19th – 21st of June 2017 by YOUTHHUBAFRICA a pan African youth organization, hosting youth leaders from across Nigeria representing youth led organizations who had hosted youth policy dialogues in their states to discuss, analyze and review the Nigerian National youth Policy passed in 2009 and the 2016 Draft policy. RUDERF was represented by our Founder Ms Okoroleju Alero.
The conference was opened by Veronica Bakam of youthhubafrica, introducing the purpose and a detailed speech was given by the conveyer in the person of Rotimi Olawale , Founder Youthhubafrica on the validity and importance of the forum . The experts convened for 2 days discussion and reviewing data collated from the six geo political zones, representing the ideas and suggestion from their various participants. Breakout sessions and plenary presentations from group representatives were accommodated to share ideas and deliberations with the house. Through breakout sessions and presentations, the event provided a platform for learning, networking and sharing of ideas towards revolutionizing the structure of youth governance and participation in decision making processes within the Nigerian System with extensive deliberations on Youth led organizations, particularly the National Youth Parliament and the National Youth Council of Nigeria
Keynote speakers included; Samson Itodo of YIAGA speaking on “Towards a new National Youth Policy: Reflections on current Realities and The Nigerian Youth” which was done in day 1.
Day 2 keynote speech was presented by Wale Ajani (Former National Youth Council President) on “Reforming the National Youth Council “
Also Lois Auta an advocate for the rights f people living with disabilities, an Ashoka change maker scholar and Mandela Washington fellow addressed the participants on “Challenges faced by Nigerian youths living with disabilities. The consultative forum concluded with analyses of all results from the youth policy dialogues and further presentations at plenary were held, following a media break and interview sessions with participants. A tweetathon aimed at sparking conversation on twitter centered on the National Youth Policy, closing remarks and group picture sessions. The policy review expert consultative forum was a well-structured program which inspired and motivated youth leaders present to further the conclusions drawn during the initiative to take the lead in their various organizations towards creating awareness among young people gearing them towards being involvement in policy making and nation building.
