The Igbodo Youth Development Program (IYDP), launched in 2019, followed the success of the earlier We Lead Mentorship Program in Igbodo
This initiative aimed to empower young people in Igbodo community with economically advantageous skills that they could use in cities and towns for financial benefit, as well as foster their ability to identify and create financial opportunities from within their communities. The primary goal of the program was to equip youth with critical skills that would deter the lure of illegal migration, encourage self-development, and enhance their problem-solving abilities, preparing them for leadership roles in both the community and Nigeria at large.
The IYDP 2019 concentrated on several core skills relevant for the modern economy:
Partnership with Union Bank
The program was made possible through RUDERF’s collaboration with Union Bank of Nigeria, which provided funding and support for the Igbodo ICT Centre. This ICT Centre was fully equipped by RUDERF and served as the primary training hub for the 96 youth who participated in the program. These youth received basic computer and ICT training, and upon successful completion, they were awarded scholarships for advanced computer training to further enhance their skills.
Impact and Long-Term Benefits
The IYDP 2019 was designed to provide 21st-century skills that would empower Igbodo youth to access opportunities both within their community and beyond. The program aimed to foster self-reliance by equipping participants with viable skills that can create sustainable income streams, reducing the dependency on migration or external aid.
Key Achievements:
Future Outlook
The Igbodo Youth Development Program serves as a model for how community-driven development can create long-term change. By continuing to build upon these skills-based programs, Igbodo youth are better equipped to participate in Nigeria’s growth while addressing their community’s unique needs.
This initiative remains a crucial part of RUDERF’s commitment to sustainable development, leveraging partnerships with institutions like Union Bank to ensure that young people have access to opportunities that empower them for the future.
