The Google Digital Skills Training Program ran from 2017 to 2019, with RUDERF acting as a key training partner for the South-South region of Nigeria.
This initiative, funded by the Google Digital Skills for Africa Program, was designed to equip youth, high school students, and teachers in Delta State with critical digital skills to enhance their employability, entrepreneurship opportunities, and overall participation in the digital economy.
Through this program, RUDERF successfully trained 5,000 secondary school students, 1,000 youth, and 200 teachers within the South-South region of Nigeria. These trainees were provided with essential skills in areas such as digital literacy, internet navigation, digital marketing, and basic coding.
Impact and Long-Term Benefits
Before the program, rural communities in Nigeria, particularly in the South-South region, faced significant barriers to digital inclusion. According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics (2018), rural youth in Nigeria had a digital literacy rate of only 26%, which was far below the national average. By the end of the program, RUDERF’s training efforts played a pivotal role in bridging this digital divide, with a significant number of the trained youth and teachers gaining crucial digital skills to improve their personal and professional opportunities.
The program’s long-term benefits include:
This initiative has left a lasting impact on digital inclusion, providing the youth of the South-South region with the necessary tools to thrive in a tech-driven world. Through continued digital education and support, these young people are now better prepared to take advantage of global opportunities, helping to close the digital divide and foster greater economic and social development within Nigeria.
